The crown fits right over the remaining part of the tooth, making it strong and giving it the shape and contour of a natural tooth. Crowns are sometimes also known as ‘caps’.

What is a dental crown?

A dental crown is a custom-made restoration that covers and protects a damaged or weakened tooth while restoring its shape, appearance and function.

Why would I need a crown?

There are several reasons. For instance:

The tooth may have been weakened by having an extensive filling.
You may have discoloured fillings and would like to improve the appearance of the tooth.
You may have had a root filling, which will need a crown to protect it.
You may have had an accident and damaged the tooth.
It may help hold a bridge or denture firmly in place.

What are crowns made of?

Crowns are made from a variety of materials, and new materials are continually being introduced. Here are some of the options available at present:

Porcelain bonded to precious metal: The most common crown is white. Porcelain is applied over base metal.
All porcelain/ceramic: Not quite as strong, but minimal tooth preparation and looks very natural, therefore fantastic for front teeth.
Porcelain bonded to Zirconia: Strong and metal-free, so both functional and aesthetic.
Metal only: Very strong and hard-wearing, less tooth drilling needed, but gold or silver in colour, so used mainly at the back of the mouth.

Does getting a crown hurt?

The tooth is normally numbed with local anaesthetic during preparation. Some sensitivity or tenderness can occur afterwards and should settle as the tooth adapts.

How long do dental crowns last?

Crowns can last many years, but longevity varies according to the material, bite forces, oral hygiene and maintenance. They may eventually need repair or replacement.

Will the tooth underneath a crown still need care?

Yes. A crowned tooth still needs daily brushing, cleaning between the teeth and regular dental reviews. Plaque can build up around the crown margins just as it can around natural teeth.

I have been at this dentist since 1982 and never been anywhere else so it’s hard for me to comment under the current owner /management i have always found them great and accommodating I had a cracked tooth and they managed to fit me at short notice highly recommended

Visited the clinic today for a dental procedure performed by Dr Yousaf CHAUDARY who was amazing in both the manner he conducted the operation and the fact he explained fully what he needed to do. I have nothing but the highest praise for Dr CHAUDARY and the clinic staff.

A dental visit can be scary and nerve-wracking and I can fully say that I was immediately at ease and comfortable when I stepped into the consultation room :) a lovely kind and personable approach from the doctor and as far as tooth extractions go - this was so quick and felt rather easy! 100% would recommend :)

I am a rare visitor to the dentist, mainly because I don't have many teeth left 😀 However a week ago my crown fell off and had the tooth pulled with an appointment scheduled for today, expecting another extraction. The young lady dentist I saw was very helpful and on realising it was only another crown that had come off, put me a temp crown on. Next week I'm back again to have a tooth fitted to my denture, She explained the options and to date I'm very happy with the treatment. Bit of a shock exps wise but my NHS expired some years ago. Very pleasant Dentist!

Having cracked my front tooth over the weekend, I attended Heralds Way Dental Clinic and was originally seen by Maliha Ali. I was then referred to Dr Saqib Ali, who specialises in cosmetic dentistry and having been given the options to repair my tooth, I was given an appointment for three days later. The repair has been completed today by Saqib Ali assisted by his dental nurse, Esma. The result is fantastic. Lovely service — everyone is super friendly. I can't remember the name of our dentist, but she’s fantastic with all of us, especially our little girls (they're not scared of the dentist anymore!).
