Dental implants are a permanent tooth replacement method that closely resembles natural teeth.

Not only is the top portion replaced, but also the root that securely holds the tooth in place.

The ‘root’ is made of titanium and is designed to fuse with the jawbone, providing a secure foundation. Dental implants often look, feel and function like natural teeth.

Dental implants can often replace a single tooth, several teeth, or all of your missing teeth or help retain bridges and dentures.

Implants are made from titanium, a biocompatible material that can form a strong bond with living bone tissue. The bone tissue grows onto the implant’s surface, a process called osseointegration and biointegration. You may hear us use these terms.

When fixed firmly within the jawbone, the implant will be strong enough to withstand the daily forces of chewing and normal function. If it fails to integrate with the jawbone, it will not be strong enough to withstand the chewing forces and will require removal.

The number of implants inserted will depend on the prosthesis. For example, one implant replaces one missing tooth, while six implants may be needed for a complete upper prosthesis with 12 artificial teeth.

FAQs

How does it work?

To place an implant, we make an incision to open your gums. Then, using special techniques and instruments, the implant will be inserted into the jawbone.

The incision will be closed around a ‘healing abutment’ or completely closed with sutures. The bone surrounding the implant can take up to 3 months to heal.

We will test the implant to see if it has properly integrated with the bone. This is important because the implants must be strong enough to support the prosthesis and withstand the forces of chewing and normal function. If the implants are successful, we will proceed with the fabrication of the prosthesis. The prosthesis may be fixed to the implant using cement or screws, making it non-removable. Alternatively, it may be attached in a way that allows for easy removal for cleaning. These are called over-dentures.

Cleanliness is crucial. Implants, prostheses, gums and remaining teeth must be cleaned daily to avoid dental plaque. Constant attention to cleanliness will improve the chances of the implants being successful.

Implant hygiene is a lifelong commitment for you, as the patient, and for us, as your dental team.

What are some benefits of dental implants?

Benefits of dental implants

  • An improved facial appearance helps preserve the integrity of the facial structure.
  • Improved Comfort by eliminating irritation of the removable prosthesis.
  • Eat better by restoring chewing efficiency.
  • Smile confidently, knowing your teeth won’t fall out or pop out.
  • Protect your remaining teeth, knowing that implants do not need to interfere with them.

What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is a small, biocompatible fixture placed into the jawbone to replace the root of a missing tooth. Once it has healed, it can support a replacement tooth such as a crown, bridge or denture.

Am I suitable for dental implants?

Suitability depends on your oral health, gum health, available bone, bite, medical history and the area being treated. Your dentist will assess you clinically and may recommend X-rays or 3D CBCT imaging before confirming whether implants are suitable.

Do I need healthy gums before having dental implants?

Good gum health is important for successful implant treatment. If you have active gum disease, decay or other dental problems, these may need to be treated before implant surgery.

Will dental implant treatment hurt?

Implant placement is normally carried out under local anaesthetic, so you should not feel pain during the procedure. Some tenderness, swelling or bruising can occur afterwards and is usually managed with the aftercare and pain-relief advice provided by your dentist.

How long does dental implant treatment take?

The overall process varies from patient to patient. Some cases can be completed relatively quickly, while others require healing periods between stages. Your dentist will explain the expected timeline for your individual treatment.

How long does a dental implant last?

Dental implants can provide a long-term tooth replacement solution when they are well maintained. The implant itself and the replacement tooth are different components, and the crown, bridge or denture may eventually need maintenance or replacement.

Why does dental implant treatment cost more than some other tooth replacement options?

Implant treatment involves several stages and may include detailed planning, imaging, surgery, implant components, laboratory work and the final restoration. Costs can also vary according to the number of implants and whether procedures such as bone grafting are needed. The most useful comparison is between complete treatment plans rather than implant prices alone.

Should I consider having dental implants abroad?

Treatment abroad may appear less expensive, but it is important to consider the full treatment plan, regulation, implant system and components, clinical records, follow-up care and how any complications would be managed after you return home. Your dentist can discuss the alternatives and help you make an informed decision.

What can go wrong with dental implants?

As with any surgical procedure, dental implants carry risks. These can include infection, bleeding, discomfort, delayed or failed integration with the bone, damage to nearby structures and problems affecting the implant or replacement tooth. Longer-term gum inflammation around an implant can develop into peri-implant disease. Your dentist will discuss the risks relevant to you.

What is peri-implantitis?

Peri-implantitis is inflammation and infection affecting the tissues around a dental implant, with associated loss of supporting bone. Good oral hygiene, professional maintenance and regular implant reviews can help reduce the risk and identify problems early.

What is bone grafting for dental implants?

Bone grafting is a procedure used to add or rebuild bone where there is not enough bone volume for planned implant treatment. Depending on the site and amount of bone required, it may be carried out before implant placement or, in selected cases, at the same time.

What are 'teeth in a day'?

‘Teeth in a day’ is a term often used for treatment where temporary teeth are attached to dental implants on the same day as implant placement or shortly afterwards. It does not necessarily mean that the final permanent teeth are fitted that day. Suitability depends on factors such as bone quality, implant stability and your overall treatment plan.
